Mistplay.com review: what a unit is actually worth

We run PaysFair, an app that competes with Mistplay. Treat every line below as coming from an interested party, and check the numbers yourself. We've listed the sources at the end so you can.

We have not run Mistplay. We didn't install it, didn't make an account, and didn't time a single checkpoint. That matters more here than on most reviews, because the whole question is how many hours a payout costs, and we haven't spent those hours. What we can prove is the arithmetic. A Mistplay unit is worth about a third of a cent, because Mistplay's own sweepstakes rules price 30,000 units at $100. Every figure below is Mistplay's own published claim, arithmetic on Mistplay's own numbers, or a number another review printed, and we say which.

What a Mistplay.com unit is worth

300 units make one dollar. A third of a cent each.

That isn't our estimate. In September 2024 Mistplay ran a sweepstakes called Prize Paradise whose prize was 30,000 Mistplay Units. Its official rules state what that prize is worth: USD $100.00. For once, the company put a dollar figure on its own currency.

30,000 units for $100 is 300 units per dollar.

The rates other reviews print land in the same place or worse. One says "approximately 300 units = $1." One earned 1,538 units and valued them at about $5, which is 308. One quotes 1,800 units for a $5 card, which is 360. One gives a range of 303 to 800 units per dollar.

So 300 is the good end. Every unit number the app shows you has a dollar price, and divide by 300 is the friendliest version of it.

We had to work the rate out because Mistplay doesn't print it where you'd look. Its gift card page lists the brands and shows no costs. None of the 100 articles across its two help centres prices a single reward. You find out what a card costs after you install.

The two chest rows are ours. Mistplay publishes the odds for both, which is to its credit. A Daily Tasks chest pays 100 units 90% of the time, 150 units 8% of the time, and 500 units 2% of the time. Multiply and add and you get 112 units on average, or 37 cents. A Buddy Quest chest works out to 270 units, or 90 cents.

Now look at that Twitter row again. Following the company on social media pays two cents.

How long until the first Mistplay gift card

Mistplay answers this one itself. Its Google Play listing, read on 22 September 2026, claims "an average time to first reward of just three hours."

We can't check that, and we won't pretend to. But we can say what helps at the start. New accounts get 200 welcome units. And some checkpoints carry a timer that starts the moment you install a game: reach one before its timer runs out and it pays a bigger reward.

The welcome units only come once. After that, every card comes from play, under the limits below.

Why Mistplay's reward speed keeps dropping

You only get paid for games you've never installed. Mistplay's help centre is blunt about it: games you've played or installed in the past don't qualify. The app rewards you for games you newly discovered through Mistplay. That's the whole business, so it's not a trick. But it means your supply of paying games shrinks every time you use one up.

Each game has two limits. You can earn game experience points in any one game for two hours a day, outside a few exceptions such as tournaments. And each game stops paying units at checkpoint 20. Hit either one and you switch games or you stop earning.

So the app has to keep pushing new installs. A Google Play reviewer put it plainly on 30 April 2026, in a review more than 200 people marked helpful: "if you try to complete your dailies, you're going to be downloading 5-6 new games a week." The same review says some daily tasks ask you to spend real money in a game you recently downloaded, and Mistplay's own help centre describes daily tasks that require an in-app purchase.

Another reviewer described the same slide on 21 April 2026: "lately I've been noticing that I don't get credited the higher valued bonus points for downloading and starting a new game. I would only get 20 or less if any at all." Mistplay replied in public three days later and pointed the reviewer to its help article on playtime tracking.

That's the treadmill. None of it is hidden. It's just spread across the Economy Disclosure and several help articles, so it's easy to meet each limit as a surprise.

The $550 Mistplay ceiling most reviews leave out

Mistplay caps what you can take out. Its Economy Disclosure and its Terms of Use both say the same thing: you may redeem a maximum of $550 USD per calendar year. In units, that's 165,000.

There's a second clock. Units and gems can expire if you don't log in or earn for 180 days. So a balance you're saving toward a bigger card has a deadline on it. On iPhone it's 90 days.

We measured the seven readable pages that rank for "mistplay reviews" on 22 September 2026. Two of the seven mention the $550 cap. One mentions the 180 day expiry. One names the Economy Disclosure, the document where Mistplay explains its own economy.

Why a Mistplay unit has no fixed value

This is the part that decides everything, and it's written into the contract.

Mistplay's Terms of Use reserve the right to "run tests or experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of different reward structures," and say that testing "may include varying the type, frequency, and value of Units, Gems, other incentives, promotions, and Rewards offered."

Read that again. The company reserves the right to change what your units are worth, as an experiment.

The Economy Disclosure says the same thing in gentler words. The amount of units you earn is "unique to your Mistplay account." Your unit multiplier is "personal to you." Redemption values "may also vary by user, provider, and location."

You can see it in the rates reviews print. One gives anywhere from 303 to 800 units per dollar, a spread of more than two and a half times inside one app.

So there's no single rate that's true for everyone. The 300 to the dollar figure is the value Mistplay itself put on its units, in the official rules of a 2024 prize draw. It's the best number available. It's not a promise.

Mistplay on Android and iPhone: two currencies, two rulebooks

Mistplay runs an Android app and an iPhone app, and they're not the same product.

Your balance can't cross. Mistplay's iPhone help centre says an Android account and any points, rewards or units "cannot be transferred to Mistplay for iPhone/iPad." The App Store listing says the same of iPhone points. If you move between Android and iPhone, you start again.

The expiry row matters if you save up. On iPhone, the terms say your points expire if you earn or redeem nothing for 90 days, and Mistplay emails you at least 30 days before. On Android the Economy Disclosure gives 180 days. The iPhone terms also say you must be a legal resident of, and located in, the United States.

The age rows are worth a second look. Both sets of terms say 18. The iPhone help centre says you must be at least 13. Apple rates the iPhone app 17+. Three answers for one iPhone app, all live on the same day.

What Mistplay costs you besides time

Mistplay has to check that you'd never installed a game before, and it has to measure how long you play. That's how the whole model works, and it needs real access to your phone to do it.

Its Google Play data safety form declares that the app collects the list of apps installed on your device, plus your in-app search history and app interactions. It declares that it shares approximate location and precise location with other companies. Precise location is shared for fraud prevention. Approximate location is shared for advertising and marketing too.

The app also needs two Android permissions to record playtime: screen overlay and usage access. Android's own settings screen says usage access "allows an app to track what other apps you're using and how often, as well as your carrier, language settings, and other details."

Mistplay declares all of it openly. It's still a real price, and it's worth knowing before you install.

What Mistplay's own numbers say about the average player

Mistplay publishes a yearly review on its blog called Playback. Two editions report the same three measures in almost the same words, which is enough to work out what an average player actually gets.

Playback 2023 says players had redeemed over $60 million to date, off 30 million lifetime installs, with more than 2 million monthly active users.

Playback 2024 says over $150 million to date, off 35 million lifetime installs, with more than 2 million monthly active users. Its footnote dates the data to 1 January through 31 October 2024.

So roughly $90 million went out in about a year, across more than 2 million monthly active players. That's about $45 per active player for the year. Call it $3.75 a month, or 37 units a day.

Put that next to the chests. One Daily Tasks chest averages 112 units. A player claiming a chest every day would already be earning three times the average. So most active accounts can't be claiming a chest every day and cashing it out.

The same arithmetic on lifetime numbers gives $150 million across 35 million installs, or $4.29 per install, ever.

Mistplay's own gift card page gets you to nearly the same place by a different route. It says over $200 million claimed across 50 million players, cumulative as of 2025. That's $4.00 per player. Two different pairs of the company's numbers, from different years, both land near four dollars a head for the entire life of the account.

These are floors divided by floors, so treat them as an order of magnitude and not a precise figure. The order of magnitude is the point. The average active player redeems about $45 a year, against a cap of $550. At that average, no more than one active player in twelve could even reach the ceiling.

Turning that into an hourly rate needs a guess about hours played, so we won't guess. But two of the reviews we measured show their own working, and their raw unit counts don't need a guess. One logged 1,960 units over 18 hours. The other logged 1,538 units over about six hours. At 300 units to the dollar, that's roughly 36 cents and 85 cents an hour.

Six of the seven ranking reviews put a figure on the hour: $0.10 to $0.20, $0.50 to $3, $1, $1 to $2, $1 to $3, and $1 to $3. A thirty-fold spread on one app. The two reviews that logged their own units work out near the low end of it.

Where Mistplay's own figures disagree

While reading the sources we found something we can't explain, so we'll just show it.

The last three rows are the problem. All three were live on 22 September 2026. All three date their figure to 2025. They say $100 million, $200 million and $250 million. Each one says "more than" or "over", so none is strictly false if the biggest is right. But a reader can't tell which one is close to the truth.

We're not calling that dishonest. Store listings go stale, and nobody proofreads a footnote against a footnote on another website. But it does mean the headline payout number isn't something you can lean on, whichever one you happen to read.

For contrast, here's a Mistplay number that is solid. The EU's Digital Services Act forces platforms to publish their user counts. Mistplay's notice, updated 17 August 2026, reports 331,562 average monthly active recipients in the European Union for the six months to 1 August 2026. Precise, dated, and published because the law requires it.

Who Mistplay suits, and who should skip it

Two things decide it, and neither is the payout rate.

Would you have played these games anyway? If yes, the units are a small bonus on time you were spending regardless. A daily chest averages 37 cents, and the average active player redeems about $45 a year. Small, but real, and nobody was paying you before. That's a genuine answer, not a sarcastic one.

If no, the arithmetic is unkind. You'd be installing games you don't want, on a two hour daily clock, toward a ceiling of $550 a year, about twelve times what the average active player takes out.

Are you willing to keep installing? The model only pays for new games. If you're the kind of player who settles into one game for months, Mistplay pays you least. The reviewer quoted above said as much: "I'm probably the wrong target audience, as I like to play games for a while before I change them up."

A few things to weigh before you decide. Mistplay's terms say 18+ on both apps. Your balance can expire: after 180 days without earning on Android, after 90 days without earning or redeeming on iPhone. It won't follow you to a new phone if you change operating system. And some of what's inside runs on chance: a Mystery Box you spend units to spin, and sweepstakes you redeem units to enter. We don't build either of those into PaysFair, and that's the only comparison with our own app on this page. Judge that preference however you like, given who's writing.

What we can't tell you is what an hour is actually worth to you, on your games, on your account, at whatever multiplier Mistplay has decided you get. The company says that rate is personal, and it reserves the right to change it. The only way to know is to try it and time it. If you do, time it honestly, and check your unit balance against 300 to the dollar.

What this Mistplay review can't answer

We didn't run the app, so we have no timed hour of our own. The 300 units to the dollar rate rests on one sweepstakes prize valuation, from 2024. The rates four other reviews print agree with it or are worse, but we found no rate card from Mistplay, and the real prices live only in the in-app shop. One ranking page says Mistplay holds an F rating with the Better Business Bureau. We couldn't confirm that at the BBB itself, so it isn't in this review. Two pages that rank for this term, sidehustlenation.com and sidehustles.com, blocked our requests, so we didn't judge their content.
