Swagbucks.com pays. We went looking for a reason to call it a scam and didn't find one.
We have not run Swagbucks ourselves. No account, no install, nothing redeemed, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Everything here comes from Swagbucks' own help centre and rewards catalogue, from its parent company's pages, from the app's own Google Play declaration, and from one thing we did do. We read all 570 rewards in its public catalogue and checked the price of every one.
That sweep turned up the number the five ranking reviews we read all miss. Cashing out to PayPal costs 30 SB more than face value, every time, whatever the amount. On a five dollar cash-out that's a 6 percent cut. On a hundred dollar one it's 0.3 percent.
It pays, then, and the rate is honest almost everywhere. Getting the money out is where it costs you.
What does an hour on Swagbucks pay?
We can't tell you, and we don't think the pages ranking for that question can either.
We read five of them in September 2026. One puts the figure at $2.04 an hour. One says $3 to $6. One says $1 to $5. None of them says how it got there. There's no sample, no dates, no record of what was actually done. We're not adding a fourth number to that pile.
The honest answer is shorter. What an hour returns depends on which surveys you're offered, and that depends on who you are and where you live. Swagbucks says as much itself. Surveys target a demographic, "such as 25-year-old males who have traveled to Las Vegas in the past year", and it warns that "not every survey you participate in will necessarily lead to a completed credit".
A survey can end partway through with nothing. That's normal for surveys, not a fault of this one. Swagbucks also tells members not to speed through surveys, because that "factors into disqualifications".
What is measurable is what your points are worth once you have them, and what it costs to turn them into money. We measured that.
What is an SB actually worth?
100 SB is one dollar. Swagbucks states that in its help centre, and its catalogue backs it up.
On 22 September 2026 we fetched every US reward listed in Swagbucks' own sitemap, 570 pages, one at a time. After dropping foreign-currency cards, charity drives with no fixed price, and branded merchandise, 516 US rewards were left with both a price and a face value. 510 of them, 98.8 percent, cost exactly 100 SB per dollar. None cost less.
Six cost more. All six are PayPal.

Swagbucks explains the charge on the PayPal page itself. The extra 30 cents "helps cover the increasing cost of offering the PayPal redemption option, including processing fees that PayPal charges us for sending payments".
That's a fair reason. It still means cashing out five dollars at a time costs twenty times the rate of cashing out a hundred at a time. If you want cash rather than a gift card, save up first.
How much do you need before you can cash out on Swagbucks?
Swagbucks says you can redeem "with as few as 300 SB". We couldn't find a 300 SB reward.
Across all 570 catalogue pages, the cheapest US reward was 500 SB for a five dollar gift card. The cheapest cash was 530 SB, which is five dollars through PayPal. Charity donations start at 5 SB, but that money goes to the charity, not to you.
A 300 SB reward may sit outside the public sitemap, or it may depend on the account. We couldn't close that gap, so treat five dollars as the realistic first payout rather than three.
How can you earn on Swagbucks?
Swagbucks spreads the work across a lot of small lanes:
- Surveys and daily polls
- Discover offers, where you try a service and earn when you complete it
- Games
- Shop and Earn cashback through its links
- Magic Receipts, where you photograph a grocery receipt
- Search, using its own search box
- Daily Trivia
- Referrals, which pay 10 percent of what the people you refer earn in the main categories
Two of those need a warning. The welcome bonus is ten dollars, and Swagbucks says it needs you to spend at least 25 dollars on a qualifying purchase first. And shopping rewards can be taken back: "If you return, exchange or cancel part or all of a purchase, the appropriate number of SB earned would be reversed for that purchase."
How long does Swagbucks take to pay, and what can stop it?
Longer than most people expect, and several things can stop it.
Swagbucks says a survey can take up to seven business days to credit, and that many activities take up to 30 days to credit.
Paying out through PayPal has three conditions, and all three have to match:
- Your name on Swagbucks must match your PayPal name exactly
- Your Swagbucks email must be on your PayPal account
- Your PayPal account must be linked and confirmed by a bank account
That last one catches people out. A PayPal account without a confirmed bank behind it won't receive the payment.
It can also ask you to prove who you are. The identity check wants "an image of a government-issued ID and a selfie", it's run by a third party called Persona, and Swagbucks says the review "may require up to 10 business days".
Then there's tax. Once you redeem 600 dollars or more in a calendar year, Swagbucks says you have to fill in a tax form, and that you "will not be allowed to continue redemptions (except for PayPal and Gambit) for the rest of the calendar year" until you do. It files a 1099 with the IRS on your behalf.
Two smaller costs sit on the prepaid cards. Turning a virtual card into a plastic one costs three dollars out of the card balance, and takes two to three weeks to arrive.
None of the five reviews we checked mentions the 600 dollar rule, the identity check, or the PayPal surcharge. We searched all five pages for all three.
What does the Swagbucks app take from you?
More than most people assume, and Prodege declares it plainly on Google Play.
The app shares approximate location and precise location with other companies. Precise location is shared for "App functionality, Advertising or marketing". Device IDs, app interactions and user IDs go out too. It collects your email address and user IDs, with name, phone number, location and photos marked optional. It says data is encrypted in transit and that you can request deletion. The listing carries 4.2 stars from 269,953 reviews, 10 million or more downloads, and a Teen rating. The minimum age to join is 13.
There's one more thing, and it's in the house rules rather than the privacy policy. Swagbucks tells members not to "share details about surveys with friends nor on public forums, including details about survey contents, survey titles, survey IDs, time of completion, screenshots". It also lists this under things not to do: "Post to public forums that your engagement with video, offers and other actions on Swagbucks.com is only motivated by getting SB."
That's worth knowing if you search for Swagbucks on Reddit and the threads feel thinner than you expected. The platform's own rulebook discourages exactly the posts you're looking for.
What do Swagbucks members rate worst?
Swagbucks publishes a member rating on most reward pages. We collected all of them: 424 rewards carrying 14,399 ratings, averaging 4.13 out of 5.
The split is the interesting part. Taking only rewards with at least 50 ratings:

The worst-rated reward in the catalogue is the five dollar Amazon card, at 1.47 from 53 people. Then PayPal $5 at 2.39, and the 25 dollar Amazon card at 2.45. The best are a Zappos card at 4.82, an Applebee's card at 4.78, and a charity donation drive at 4.74.
Members rate the ways of getting cash roughly a point lower than the ways of getting a specific gift card. We can't say why from the numbers alone. These are Swagbucks' own ratings, unverified by us and moderated by them, and a low score might be about a delivery problem rather than the reward itself. The pattern is consistent, though, and it sits on Swagbucks' own pages.
Who actually owns Swagbucks?
Prodege LLC. The same company lists MyPoints, Tada, InboxDollars, ySense, CouponCause and Upromise as its own brands, plus two business platforms, Pollfish and BitLabs.
That matters if you're shopping around. Signing up for InboxDollars because Swagbucks disappointed you means signing up with the same company. Prodege bought Pollfish in February 2022, which put the panel that answers surveys and the platform that sells them under one roof. It advertises two billion dollars in rewards paid across its brands and coverage in 60 or more countries. A new chief executive, Todd Parsons, starts on 1 October 2026.
Who is Swagbucks for, and who should skip it?
It suits you if you already shop online and want cashback on top of it. It suits you if you have dead time and low expectations. And it suits you if you want a gift card for a specific shop rather than cash. Gift cards avoid the PayPal surcharge entirely, and they're what members rate highest.
Skip it if you need money by a date, because payouts can take days to weeks. Skip it if you won't hand a government ID and a selfie to a third party, because that can be required before you're paid. Skip it if you'd cash out five dollars at a time, because that's the most expensive way to use it. And skip it if you're not comfortable with precise location going to advertisers, because the app says that's what happens.
Is Swagbucks legit? The verdict, September 2026
Swagbucks is legitimate. It pays, the exchange rate holds across 510 of the 516 rewards we priced, the parent company is real and named, and the one regulator list we searched does not name it. Prodege and Swagbucks are absent from the FTC list of more than 1,100 companies sent a Notice of Penalty Offenses in October 2021 about money-making claims. That isn't a clean bill of health, and being sent that notice wouldn't have meant guilt either. It's one check we ran that the review pages didn't.
What it is not is quick or frictionless. The money takes days to weeks, the cash rail costs 30 SB every time, a government ID can be demanded, and 600 dollars in a year triggers a tax form and a 1099. Expect very little, slowly, and it's a reasonable use of dead time. Expect an income and you'll be disappointed.

Questions people ask about Swagbucks
Is Swagbucks legit?
Yes. It is run by Prodege LLC, which advertises two billion dollars in rewards paid across its brands, and 510 of the 516 US rewards we priced in its own catalogue cost exactly what its stated rate says they should. We also searched the FTC list of more than 1,100 companies sent a Notice of Penalty Offenses about money-making claims in October 2021. Prodege and Swagbucks are not on it. That is one check, not a clean bill of health.
How many SB is a dollar?
100 SB is one dollar, and Swagbucks says so in its own help centre. We checked it against the catalogue on 22 September 2026: 510 of 516 US rewards cost exactly 100 SB per dollar, and none cost less.
Does Swagbucks charge a fee to cash out to PayPal?
Yes, 30 SB above face value, every time. Swagbucks discloses it on the PayPal reward page and says it helps cover the fees PayPal charges for sending payments. Because the fee is flat, it is 6 percent of a five dollar cash-out and 0.3 percent of a hundred dollar one.
How long does Swagbucks take to pay?
It depends on the activity. Swagbucks says a survey can take up to seven business days to credit and that many activities take up to 30 days to credit. Paying out through PayPal needs your name, your email and a bank-confirmed PayPal account to match.
