Real ways to make money from home for free

Most free ways to earn from home start with an application, then pay per task or order: Prolific requires at least $8 an hour, Rev pays transcriptionists $0.40 to $1.10 an audio minute, and Fiverr passes on 80% of each order. Anyone who asks you to pay for a job is a scammer, the FTC says.

What are the real ways to make money from home for free?

Five of these don't charge a fee in their own sign-up steps. The sixth, Etsy, can cost money before your first sale.

Fiverr. "After an order is completed, freelancers receive 80% of the client's cleared payment," Fiverr's help says (October 6, 2026). The money then clears for 14 days before you can withdraw it. Fiverr reviews every freelancer during sign-up and when they create a Gig. You'll need to be 18 to withdraw earnings, and at 13 to 17 you can only work through a parent's or guardian's account. A PayPal withdrawal costs $0, from $1. Fiverr Ads put your Gigs at the top of search, and you're charged per click.

Prolific. Its rule for researchers is a minimum of $8 an hour, and it recommends $12. It judges the rate by how long people really take, and it's the median time that counts. New participants join a waitlist and verify their identity, which takes 15 minutes, Prolific says. You can cash out once you've earned $6, and it pays in cash by PayPal.

UserTesting. Asked "Do I have to pay to be a contributor?", its FAQ answers no. Reward amounts "for each test vary and depend on factors like test type, duration, and customer demand," and your dashboard shows the amount before you start. You'll usually be paid 14 days after a test, by PayPal only. You apply with a short practice test.

Rev. Transcriptionists earn "$0.40 - $1.10 per audio/video minute," paid weekly by PayPal, and captioners earn $0.54 to $1.10. You'll apply with a short skills assessment and a sample. Rev says "We currently have a waitlist due to high application volume."

OfferUp. "All the features you need to start buying and selling immediately are free," OfferUp's help says. You get 200 free listings a month in most categories, fewer in a few, such as 15 for phones, and more listings cost money. It's local pickup only, since shipping ended in 2025, and it works only in the US.

Etsy. Etsy's fee policy, last updated October 5, 2026, says "To open your Etsy shop, you may be required to pay a one-time set-up fee." It charges $0.20 for each listing, 6.5% of each sale's price plus shipping, and a payment processing fee on each sale. So an Etsy shop can cost money before you've sold anything.

Which work-from-home offers make you pay first?

The FTC's rule is short: "Don't pay for the promise of a job." Honest employers, including the federal government, won't ever ask you to pay to get one, it says. In work-from-home job scams, "instead of making money, you end up paying for starter kits, so-called training, or certifications that are useless."

A free start can be bait, too. The FTC warns that even a free or low-cost "system" for starting a business "can quickly turn into a money pit," costing tens of thousands of dollars for mentoring. It says to be ready for the upsell, and that honest offers don't need high-pressure sales tactics.

Some home offers fall under a federal rule. The FTC's Business Opportunity Rule covers "work-at-home opportunities like envelope stuffing or craft assembly where the seller offers to buy back merchandise." A seller of one has to give you a one-page Disclosure Document seven days before you sign a contract or pay any money.

Is money you make from home taxed?

Yes. If your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more in a year, the IRS says you must pay self-employment tax and file Schedule SE. UserTesting, for one, "does not withhold any taxes from payments," so it's up to you to set money aside.
