From home, a remote job pays a wage: the BLS puts median pay for customer service representatives at $21.53 an hour. Renting a room, selling and freelancing pay after the platform's cut, and the FTC says most people who join MLMs make little or no money. We read the rules on October 23, 2026.

What are the real ways to make money from home?
Each of these has a published number behind it. We read them on October 23, 2026.
| Way | What it pays | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| A remote job | Customer service: $21.53 an hour, median | Real employers don't charge you |
| Rent a room | What your guests pay | Airbnb takes 15.5% from most hosts |
| Sell what you own or make | The sale price | eBay keeps 13.6%, Etsy 6.5% |
| Freelance | Writers $36.98, designers $30.27, median | Pay after any platform fee |
A remote job. Some jobs pay a wage from home. Customer service is one: the BLS puts its 2025 median pay at $21.53 an hour, and says it typically needs a high school diploma and no related work experience. Working from home is possible at some companies, it adds. Bookkeeping clerks earn a median of $24.36. A real employer won't ask you to pay to start, and the FTC's rule is plain: never pay anyone to get paid, or to get a job.
Rent a room. Airbnb is moving home hosts to a single service fee, taken from your payout: 15.5% for most hosts, and typically 14% to 16% for the rest. Under the split fee it's phasing out, most hosts pay 3% and guests pay 14.1% to 16.5%.
Sell what you own or make. eBay keeps 13.6% of the total sale in most categories, plus 30 or 40 cents an order. Etsy charges $0.20 a listing and 6.5% of the price plus shipping.
Freelance. Writing and design pay well as jobs, at BLS medians of $36.98 and $30.27 an hour. Our side hustles guide prices freelance work against those numbers, and our online guide covers testing, surveys and platform work.
Earning apps like ours. PaysFair pays for surveys, games and campaigns. Its smallest cash-out is $1.00, sent as a gift card by email, and your first cash-out is checked by hand. Tasks done over a VPN or proxy don't count.
Which work-from-home offers are scams?
The FTC names these in its guidance on jobs and business offers.
| Offer | What the FTC says |
|---|---|
| MLMs | Most who join make little or no money |
| Reshipping goods | Never a real job |
| Starter kits and training | Useless, in work-from-home scams |
| Pay to like videos | A task scam |
| Mystery shopping checks | A fake check scam |
The FTC adds that a job promising a lot of money in a short time for little work is almost certainly a scam. Some MLMs are illegal pyramid schemes, it says, and a pyramid scheme can cost you and your recruits, often family and friends, a lot of time and money.
What does working from home cost you?
Taxes first: if you work for yourself, the IRS charges self-employment tax of 15.3% on 92.35% of your net earnings, usually from $400 a year. That's 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.
A home office can lower what you'll owe. The IRS's simplified option lets you deduct $5 per square foot of home used for business, up to 300 square feet, so $1,500 at most. The space has to be used regularly and only for business.
What do other guides on this leave out?
We read four guides on this question on October 23, 2026, and one more wouldn't load for us. None mentions MLMs, reshipping, Airbnb's fee, the home-office deduction or the BLS, and none names the FTC. Only one mentions the self-employment tax, and none uses the word scam in its article.
