You can make money online by freelancing, selling things, testing websites, joining research studies or training AI, and each platform publishes what it pays or keeps. No real online job asks you to pay to get it: the FTC calls paying to get paid a sure sign of a scam.

We build PaysFair, an earning app that competes with the apps below, so check their numbers yourself. PaysFair is for people 16 and over.

What are the real ways to make money online?

Etsy's and Udemy's figures come from Internet Archive copies of October 10 and 11, 2026, because their pages refused our reader. Upwork's and Fiverr's fee pages blocked us too, so we give Upwork's fee model from its own annual report. eBay's per-order fee is 30 cents on orders of $10 or less.

One famous way is gone. Amazon Mechanical Turk, the micro-task site, says on its homepage that it "permanently closed on September 30, 2026."

What jobs and skills make money online?

Freelance work. Upwork's annual report says it charges freelancers fees as a percentage of what they bill clients, and charges clients a separate fee. Check the current fee in your account before you quote a price, since it isn't on any page we could read.

AI training. DataAnnotation lists general projects from $25 to $50 an hour, for work like rating chatbot answers, and they ask for strong writing and critical thinking. Coding projects start at $40 to $150 or more an hour and need programming experience. It says there's no signup fee, and it pays by PayPal within a few days of a request.

Teaching and writing. Udemy pays instructors 97% of a sale made with their own coupon or link, and 37% of other sales. Kindle Direct Publishing pays 70% of an ebook priced from $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com, minus delivery costs averaging $0.06 a copy, and 35% otherwise.

Video and links. YouTube pays 55% of the net ad revenue on your public videos, once a channel has 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. Amazon's Associates program pays up to 10% depending on the category, 4% for "All Other Categories," and reviews a new account after three qualified sales within 180 days.

What apps pay you to work online?

User testing. UserTesting pays for recorded tests in which you give feedback on companies' websites and apps. Pay varies by test and shows on your dashboard, payments usually arrive 14 days later, and PayPal is the only way it pays. You'll need a microphone, and it withholds no taxes.

Research studies. Prolific, co-founded at Oxford University in 2014, pays people to take part in research, from behavior studies to AI tests. You can cash out from $6, always in cash to PayPal and never as gift cards or points. Transfers aren't instant until you've made four cash-outs. Our guide to apps that pay real money instantly explains why the first payouts are the slow ones.

Earning apps. PaysFair pays for surveys, games and campaigns, with a $1.00 smallest cash-out sent as a gift card by email. The first cash-out is checked by hand, and what there is to do depends on your country. Like every app here, it pays for tasks, so the money stops when you stop.

Can you make money online for free?

You can start without paying. UserTesting and DataAnnotation say they charge nothing to join, eBay gives you 250 free listings a month, and Kindle's publishing tools are free. What you'll put in is time.

Selling costs money once something sells. eBay keeps 13.6% of the total sale in most categories, plus 30 or 40 cents an order, and the total includes shipping and sales tax. Etsy charges 20 cents to list an item and keeps 6.5% of the price and shipping when it sells.

Any offer that asks you to pay first fails the FTC's test: "Never pay anyone to get paid, or to get a job. That's a sure sign of a scam."

How much do people really make online?

Nobody can promise what you'd earn, and YouTube's help page says so outright: "There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you'll be paid." The best national picture is the Federal Reserve's survey for 2024, published in May 2025.

How adults earned money outside a jobShare of adults

It's mostly part-time. Of the people doing these gigs, 70% spent less than five hours a week on them, and only 21% called it their main job. The Fed's report on 2025 dropped its gig section, so these are the latest figures.

Is making money online legit, or a scam?

The ways above are real, and the FTC says scammers advertise jobs the same way honest employers do. In the FTC's data, reported losses to job scams grew every year from 2020 to 2023.

YearReported losses to job scams
2020$90 million
2021$131 million
2022$179 million
2023$286 million
2024, January to June$223 million

The FTC says task scams drove the jump. You're offered a "job" liking videos or rating product images, your balance seems to climb, and then you're told to deposit money to unlock it. The FTC also says anyone who'll pay you to rate or like things online is breaking the law: "That's illegal and no honest company will do it."

Watch where the offer comes from. One in three people who lost money to a job or business opportunity scam in 2025 said it started on social media, and real employers don't send generic texts or WhatsApp messages about jobs. Two more FTC tests: a job promising a lot of money fast for little work is almost certainly a scam, and reshipping goods is never a real job.

Do you pay taxes on money you make online?

Yes. The IRS says gig income is taxable even when a 1099 form doesn't arrive. Once your net earnings from self-employment reach $400, you usually owe self-employment tax too: 12.4% for Social Security plus 2.9% for Medicare, on 92.35% of those earnings. Platforms won't always handle it for you, and UserTesting, for one, withholds no taxes.

What do most make-money-online guides get wrong?

We read nine pages a web search returned for these phrases on October 23, 2026, and counted what they say.

Four come from companies that sell one of the ways on their own list: a course platform, a print-on-demand service, a store builder and an affiliate marketplace. Our count covers one search tool on one day, so it's a snapshot.

How do you start making money online as a beginner?

  1. Pick by what you already have. Things to sell, a skill, a microphone for tests, or time for studies.
  2. Read the platform's own pay page. Note what it keeps, the smallest payout and when the money arrives.
  3. Never pay to get a job. And ignore job offers that arrive by text or WhatsApp.
  4. Keep a record from the first dollar. Gig income is taxable even without a 1099.
  5. Expect part-time money. Most people who do gigs spend under five hours a week on them.

Questions people ask about making money online

Is making money online legit?

Yes, through real platforms that publish what they pay or keep, such as eBay, Etsy, UserTesting or Kindle Direct Publishing. The scams copy their look: reported losses to job scams rose from $90 million in 2020 to $286 million in 2023, according to the FTC. Its rule is simple: never pay anyone to get paid, or to get a job.

Can you make money online for free?

You can start without paying. UserTesting and DataAnnotation say they charge nothing to join, eBay gives 250 free listings a month, and Kindle's publishing tools are free. Selling costs money once something sells: eBay keeps 13.6% of the total sale in most categories, plus 30 or 40 cents an order.

What apps make money online?

UserTesting pays for recorded feedback on websites and apps, Prolific pays for research studies from a $6 cash-out, and DataAnnotation pays for AI training work from $25 an hour, all by PayPal. Earning apps such as ours pay for surveys and games. Each one pays for tasks, so the money stops when you stop.

What skills make money online?

Writing and careful thinking pay on AI training sites: DataAnnotation's general projects start at $25 to $50 an hour and ask for strong writing and critical thinking. Programming pays more there, from $40 to $150 or more an hour. Teaching pays through courses, and Udemy pays instructors 37% of a sale they didn't bring in themselves.

Can I make money online today?

You can start today, but the money comes later. UserTesting usually pays 14 days after a test, DataAnnotation pays within a few days of a request, and Prolific's transfers are instant only after your first four cash-outs. Anyone promising real money the same day for little work fits the FTC's description of a job scam.
