Real free Visa gift cards come from earning apps, rebates and reward programs, as prepaid cards that can expire much sooner than a bought one. Some apps charge a fee for the Visa option. Treat a message saying you've won one as a scam.
We build PaysFair, an earning app that competes with the apps below, so check their numbers yourself. PaysFair is for people 16 and over. We read each company's own pages on October 23, 2026.
Where do free Visa gift cards really come from?
Earning apps that let you cash out to a Visa prepaid card are one source, and companies that pay a rebate or a reward on one are another. The CFPB's gift card rule names rebate, referral and employee incentive programs among its examples of programs that hand out promotional cards. Each has a string: an app pays for your time, a rebate needs a purchase first, and a referral reward needs someone to sign up. Five earning apps publish these rules for their Visa option.
| App | Visa option | Fee or floor |
|---|---|---|
| Freecash | Visa cash-out | 5% fee |
| JumpTask | Prepaid Visa from $1 | 4% fee |
| Testerup | Virtual Visa from $60 | No fee |
| InboxDollars | Prepaid Visa "if available" | $15 the first time |
| Swagbucks | Virtual Visa card | Use within 6 months |
Freecash. Its help (October 22, 2026) says "PayPal, Venmo, Visa and bank transfer cashouts carry a 5% withdrawal fee," while "Gift cards have no fee." Your first withdrawal needs an ID check with a selfie and $5 to $20, depending on your region.
JumpTask. Its payouts page (October 8, 2026) lists Visa among its prepaid cards and says "Prepaid options start at $1." It takes a prepaid fee of "4% of face value," against a "0% platform fee" on gift cards.
Testerup. Its help (September 30, 2026) says "Payouts to Visa virtual cards and Amazon gift cards are completely fee-free," while PayPal and Venmo cost 5%. Its payouts start at $60, in fixed amounts, and your first one needs a face check. Its help (October 15, 2026) also says the virtual Visa card is "often not accepted by Amazon."
InboxDollars. Its help (June 12, 2025) names "Gift Card, PayPal, Visa!" as payment options and lists a prepaid Visa among its e-payments "if available." Your first request needs $15 and later ones $10 or more, and "There is NO additional fee for Virtual eCards/Gift Cards." It says gift cards, Visa included, are processed within 10 days on average.
Swagbucks. Its help (May 23, 2025) says its virtual Visa card arrives by email through a partner company. "Once the unique Visa code has been provided, there is a 6-month timeline for use before they expire."
Earning apps like ours. PaysFair pays for surveys, games and campaigns with a gift card by email, from a $1.00 smallest cash-out, and your first cash-out is checked by hand. Its cash-out screen asks for the amount and the email address the card goes to, with no choice of brand. So we can't promise you a Visa card. Our guide to gift card apps explains which cards are worth taking.
What fees come with a Visa gift card?
Visa's prepaid card FAQ answers the cost question in four words: "Fees vary by issuer." On a bought card, the first one is the purchase fee. One of the seven sellers on Visa's own list showed these fees for its Visa eGift card on October 23, 2026.
| Fee | Amount | When |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | $5.95 | When you buy it |
| Monthly | $4.95 | After 12 months unused |
| Replacement | $5.00 | If it's lost or stolen |
Its page says there are "no monthly fees," but the card terms on the same page add the $4.95 after 12 months without use. Two other sellers on Visa's list advertised a code that waived the purchase fee that day.
Federal rules limit those later fees, but they don't cover every card. The CFPB's gift card rule allows a dormancy, inactivity or service fee only after a year without activity. It can come no more than once a month, and only if the card states it. Cards given out under a loyalty, award or promotional program aren't covered by those limits. They must say so on the front, with a word such as "Reward" or "Promotional," show their expiry date there, and state any fees on or with the card.
Can a Visa gift card expire?
The money on a bought one has to last for years. Visa's own FAQ says "Under federal law, gift card funds must be good for at least five years." The CFPB's rule counts those years from the day the card was issued or last loaded. The card itself can carry an earlier date, and then it has to tell you how to get a replacement. The seller we read sends one "at no charge."
A reward card can lapse much sooner. Swagbucks says its virtual Visa codes must be used within six months, so look for the date as soon as a reward card arrives.
Why won't a Visa gift card work online?
Visa says to enter the card's 16-digit number, expiration date and CVV, and to make sure the balance covers the whole purchase. If it's declined anyway, call the toll-free number on the back of the card. Hotels and car rentals often put a hold on part of the balance, and for a tip the merchant or the issuer may authorize 20% more than your bill. A card marked "Valid only in the United States" won't work abroad. And a Visa gift card can't be reloaded.
Amazon may be the problem, too. Testerup's help says its virtual Visa card is "often not accepted by Amazon" and suggests its Amazon gift card for Amazon shopping instead. Our Amazon gift card guide covers where those come from.
Which free Visa gift card offers are scams?
Start with the search results. Of the nine we got for "free visa gift card" on October 23, 2026, six were spam on sites with nothing to do with Visa. They sat at two universities, an IT company's training site, a children's mental health group in Ontario, a cooperative's site and a Calgary festival's site. None of those six would open for us: two had been taken down, and four didn't load. Of the other three, two were money guides and one was a 2014 post about a bank promotion that ended that December.
The FTC's advice on prize offers fits these pages. "Real prizes are free," it says, and anyone who asks you to pay a fee to get your prize "is a scammer." It adds that there's "absolutely no reason to ever give your bank account or credit card number to claim a prize." It also says not to reply to, or click a link in, a random text saying you've won a gift card.
Gift cards are also how scammers like to get paid. "No real business or government agency will ever tell you to buy a gift card to pay them," the FTC says. In 2024, its Consumer Sentinel Network took in 41,120 fraud reports in which people paid by gift card or reload card, with $212 million reported lost. If you paid a scammer with a Visa gift card, the FTC lists Visa's number, 1 (800) 847-2911. Keep a copy of the card or your store receipt, and report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. To check a balance, Visa points to the toll-free number on the back of the card or the card issuer's site.
What do other guides on this leave out?
We read five pages that rank for this on October 23, 2026, and one more wouldn't load for us. None of the five mentions a purchase fee or a monthly fee on a Visa gift card, or the federal five-year rule. None of them names the FTC or the CFPB, and none says a reward card can expire sooner than a bought one. One calls Visa cards from apps "reloadable," while Visa says a Visa Gift card "can't be reloaded." Another is that 2014 post. Two of the five warn about scams.
Questions people ask about free Visa gift cards
How do I get a free Visa gift card?
From an earning app that cashes out to a Visa prepaid card, such as JumpTask from $1 or Testerup from $60, or from a company's rebate or referral reward. Some apps take a fee for the Visa option, and a reward card can expire within months.
Are there fees on a Visa gift card?
On a bought one, yes. One seller on Visa's own list charged a $5.95 purchase fee on October 23, 2026, and its card terms take $4.95 a month after 12 months without use. Federal rules allow that kind of fee only after a year without activity, once a month at most.
Can Visa gift cards expire?
The money on a bought Visa gift card has to last at least five years under federal law. Reward and promotional cards are outside that rule if they show their expiry date, and Swagbucks says its virtual Visa codes must be used within six months.
Can a Visa gift card be reloaded?
No. Visa says a Visa Gift card can't be reloaded with additional funds. For a card you can add money to, it points to its reloadable prepaid cards.
Are free Visa gift card codes real?
Treat a site that hands out codes as a scam. The FTC says real prizes are free, that anyone who asks for a fee to release one is a scammer, and that there's no reason to give your bank account or card number to claim a prize.
