PayPal's own free money is its referral offer: when a friend you invite signs up and spends at least $5 within 30 days, you can both earn 1,000 Rewards points, worth $10 as cash back. Apps that pay to PayPal pay for your time. And PayPal itself says an offer of free money probably has a catch.
We build PaysFair, an earning app that competes with the apps below, so check their numbers yourself. PaysFair is for people 16 and over. We read each company's own pages on October 23, 2026.
What free money does PayPal itself give?
PayPal's refer-a-friend terms say: "When they sign up and spend at least $5 within 30 days, you both can earn 1,000 points." The terms set these rules for each side.
| Part | PayPal's rule |
|---|---|
| Your friend | A new US personal account, through your link |
| Their setup | A bank or card linked, a cell number verified |
| The purchase | $5.00 or more at checkout within 30 days |
| The reward | 1,000 points each, ready within 14 days |
| The limit | 10 friends a calendar year |
Sending money to someone doesn't count as the purchase, the terms add, and PayPal can cancel or change the offer at any time.
The points are worth cash at PayPal's own rate. Its Rewards terms (March 17, 2025) say "the current Point redemption rate is one cent per Point redeemed," so 1,000 points come to $10 as cash back. Points can also expire. To keep them, you have to earn at least 10 points or make at least three eligible PayPal transactions every 365 days. And PayPal says the benefits you redeem "may qualify as reportable by PayPal and taxable income to you."
Which apps pay to PayPal, and what's the catch?
These pay real money to PayPal, for surveys, tests or games. Each has its own floor or wait.
| App | PayPal from | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Survey Junkie | $5 (500 points) | You must be 18 |
| Prolific | $6 | A waitlist first |
| UserTesting | Each test's reward | Paid about 14 days later |
| KashKick | $10 | A PayPal account 30 days old |
| Freecash | $5 to $20 at first | 5% fee, $1 more on small ones |
| JustPlay | Usually no minimum | Maybe 3 hours of play first |
Survey Junkie. Its home page says points go to "cash through PayPal or bank transfer" from $5, or 500 points. It takes members 18 and older in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK.
Prolific. You join a waitlist, then verify your identity. "You'll always receive cash, never gift cards or points," it says, from $6.
UserTesting. PayPal is its only payout, and "Payments for completed tests are usually sent 14 days later." Each test shows its reward on your dashboard first.
KashKick. It pays from $10 after a person approves the withdrawal. Its terms (October 15, 2026) require "a US-verified PayPal or Venmo account that is at least thirty (30) days old."
Freecash. Its help (October 22, 2026) says PayPal cash-outs "carry a 5% withdrawal fee," and on PayPal, small ones add "$1 on the $5, $10 and $20 cashouts." Your first withdrawal needs $5 to $20, depending on your region, and an ID check with a selfie.
JustPlay. Its terms (June 8, 2026) say there's "usually no minimum threshold," but they may require three hours of play first. Its help says PayPal money "should be visible on your PayPal balance within just a moment!"
Earning apps like ours. PaysFair pays for surveys, games and campaigns with a gift card by email, from a $1.00 smallest cash-out, and your first cash-out is checked by hand. It doesn't pay to PayPal.
Which free PayPal money offers are scams?
PayPal says it plainly: "If you get an offer for free money, there's probably a catch." The usual catch is a small payment first, "for taxes, for legal documents, etc.," before money that never comes. It also says "a legitimate prize won't ever require you to pay in order to receive it." The FTC agrees: don't send a payment through a payment app to claim a prize.
The search results show how common the bait is. All nine results we got for "free paypal money" on October 23, 2026 were pages on sites with nothing to do with PayPal. They sat on the sites of an art museum, a regional magazine (twice), a record label, a vacuum cleaner brand and four other businesses. Six of those nine now show a closed online shop, two didn't load, and one is a user-made timeline from 2022.
Payment apps are a common way to lose money. In 2024, the FTC's Consumer Sentinel Network took in 90,571 fraud reports in which people paid through a payment app or service, with $391 million reported lost. If you paid a scammer through PayPal, the FTC says to report it through PayPal's Resolution Center or by calling 1 (888) 221-1161. Then report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Our Cash App guide covers the same scams on Cash App.
What do other guides on this leave out?
We read five pages that rank for this on October 23, 2026, and three more wouldn't load for us. None of the five names the FTC or says that PayPal points can expire or count as taxable income. One calls PayPal's US referral reward "$10 in free PayPal cash," while PayPal's terms pay 1,000 Rewards points. The user-made timeline promises "you can start earning free PayPal money instantly!"
