Free money does exist, and the surest kind is money already owed to you: states returned over $4.49 billion in unclaimed property in one year. Searching for yours costs nothing. If anyone asks you to pay a fee to get free money, the FTC says it's a scam.

We build PaysFair, an earning app, so judge our bias accordingly. PaysFair is for people 16 and over.

Does free money really exist?

Yes, in three forms. There's money that's already yours, sitting with a state, the IRS, an old employer's retirement plan or an FTC refund fund. There are bonuses that banks pay to win your account, with strings the law makes them print. And there's pay for small tasks, which costs you time and isn't really free.

By the agencies' own figures, the first kind runs into billions of dollars.

Who reports itWhat it measuresAmount
State unclaimed property officesReturned to owners in a yearOver $4.49 billion
IRS2022 refunds unclaimed in March 2026About $1.2 billion
Labor DepartmentRecovered for missing plan members since 2017Over $7 billion
FTCRedress from its cases in 2025Over $435 million

Each agency measures its own way, so the four rows don't add up to one total. We read every figure on the agency's own page on October 23, 2026.

How do you claim free money online?

Unclaimed property. USA.gov defines it as money that a business, bank or government owes you and you never collected. State governments hold most of it, so search every state you've lived in. NAUPA, the states' own association, says about 1 in 7 people have some, and searching is free. MissingMoney.com, a free site that NAUPA sponsors, covers most states in one search.

Tax refunds you never filed for. If you skipped a return in a year you were owed money, the refund waits for you, but usually for only three years. In March 2026, the IRS said about $1.2 billion in 2022 refunds was still unclaimed, for over 1.3 million people, with a median refund of $686. That deadline passed on April 15, 2026, and money left after three years becomes the Treasury's. For 2023 returns, the same rule points to April 2027.

Lost retirement accounts. The Labor Department runs the Retirement Savings Lost and Found database, set up under the SECURE 2.0 Act, to help people find retirement plan benefits they're owed. Its benefits agency says it recovered more than $7 billion for missing plan members since 2017.

FTC refunds. When the FTC wins a case, it can send money back to the people who lost it, and its actions led to more than $435 million in redress in 2025. The FTC says it will never tell you to transfer money to get a refund.

The rest of the government's lists. USA.gov says there's no single place to look. It lists separate searches for unpaid wages, old pensions, VA life insurance, FHA mortgage insurance refunds, SEC enforcement funds and failed banks or credit unions. One link on that list is out of date: Treasury Hunt, the savings bond search, closed on September 30, 2025. Lost bonds are now claimed with TreasuryDirect's forms.

Can you get free money from the government?

Not as a grant for personal bills. USA.gov says plainly that "the government does not offer 'free money' for individuals," and that federal grants are typically only for states and organizations. The FTC is blunter: "Offers of free money from government grants are scams."

The government won't contact you out of the blue about a grant, and the only list of federal grants is grants.gov, which is free. Scammers even invent agencies, like the "Federal Grants Administration," which doesn't exist.

Stimulus checks are over, too: USA.gov says the period to claim unpaid payments has ended. If you need help with food, health care or utilities, USA.gov's benefits page is the official place to start.

How can you get free money for signing up?

Banks pay bonuses to win new accounts, and the law makes them show the strings. Under Regulation DD, an ad that states a bonus must say the time requirement, the minimum balance you need and when the bonus is paid. Read those three before you open anything.

Bonuses can also be taxable. IRS Publication 550 says even noncash gifts for opening an account may be reported to you as interest income on Form 1099-INT. For sign-up bonuses inside apps, see our guide to apps that pay real money instantly.

What apps give you free money?

Apps like ours pay you for something: your answers, your time in a game, or a clip you post. That's pay for tasks, and it stops when you stop.

PaysFair pays for surveys, games and campaigns, and its smallest cash-out is $1.00, sent as a gift card by email. The first cash-out is checked by hand, and what there is to do depends on your country. If you're weighing gift cards from any app, our page on which gift cards from apps are worth taking walks through what each card costs you.

Can you get free money on Cash App?

Only through Cash App's own promotions. Cash App says it announces giveaways only on cash.app or through its verified accounts. It also says a giveaway that asks you to pay anything isn't real, since paid-entry sweepstakes are illegal in the U.S.

Cash flips are always a scam, in Cash App's words: "There is no legitimate version of 'send me money and I'll send more back.'" Flippers often send a small test payment first, $10 out and $20 back, to win your trust. One of the free money pages we read still tells readers that Cash App "frequently hosts giveaways and promotions where you can win free money instantly."

How can you get free money right now?

The official sources take a claim or a filing first. Unclaimed property means a claim with the state, an old refund means a tax return, and retirement money means finding the plan that owes it. Starting today costs nothing.

Several scams the FTC describes start with money you didn't expect. In a fake check scam, a stranger has you deposit a check, usually for more than you're owed, and send part of it back. It shows up as mystery shopping jobs, car wrap ads and prize claims. If you need money for food, health care or utilities today, start with USA.gov's benefits page.

Which free money offers are scams?

The FTC's tests are short. If you have to pay to get a prize, it's a scam, because real prizes are free. If someone wants your bank details or Social Security number to send you a prize or a grant, it's a scam. If a stranger pays you by check and asks for part of it back, it's a fake check.

Any offer to flip your cash or double your crypto is a scam too, and Cash App says so directly: "No one is doubling your bitcoin." These patterns are expensive. People reported losing $15.9 billion to fraud in 2025, and $3.5 billion of that to imposters, according to the FTC.
