Mystery shopper jobs are real, but small: in a 2016 profile, the BLS put a typical assignment at $5 to $20 a trip, often plus a refund of what you buy. A job that charges you first, or sends a check to deposit and pay back out, is a scam, the FTC says. We read the official pages on October 23, 2026.
We build PaysFair, an earning app that competes with the apps below, so check their numbers yourself. PaysFair is for people 16 and over.
What does a mystery shopper actually do?
Retailers and restaurants hire people to try a product or service and report on the experience. The shopper typically pays first and gets reimbursed, sometimes with a little extra for the work, the FTC says.
Most mystery shoppers work as independent contractors for marketing research companies, according to the BLS profile. Most visits take 15 minutes to an hour. Afterward, the shopper submits an evaluation, with receipts, to get paid.
How much do mystery shopper jobs pay?
Not much per trip. These are the figures from the BLS and the apps' own pages.
| Who says it | What a job pays |
|---|---|
| BLS, 2016 | $5 to $20 a trip, typically |
| Field Agent's app listing | $3 to $20 a location job |
| iShopFor Ipsos, 2024 | Most tasks $8 to $15 |
Some pay only covers expenses, the BLS said, like a refunded dinner with no wage for the time. It keeps no wage data on mystery shoppers specifically.
Driving cuts into it too. A shopper quoted by the BLS said that if you drive 15 miles to make $8, it might not be worth it. At the IRS rate for self-employed business driving, 76 cents a mile from July 1, 2026, those 15 miles come to $11.40.
How do you find real mystery shopper jobs?
Register with mystery shopping or market research companies, then apply to each job separately, the BLS profile says. Certification is available but typically isn't needed. MSPA Americas, the industry's trade association, runs a shopper database and an opportunity board. The FTC adds that MSPA doesn't hire or advertise for shoppers itself, and that lists of these jobs are free.
Some apps and job boards gather the shops in one place. These are their own descriptions, read October 23, 2026.
| Platform | What it is | How pay works |
|---|---|---|
| iSecretShop | A job board, nearly 1,000,000 shoppers | Each company pays, on its own schedule |
| GigSpot | Jobs from shopping and research firms | The posting company pays |
| iShopFor Ipsos | Ipsos's shopper app | PayPal; 18 and over |
| Field Agent | An app for store jobs | Paid once a job is approved |
Field Agent's own website now forwards to Storesight, a retail data service, though its app listing still offers location jobs.
Earning apps like ours. PaysFair pays for surveys, games and campaigns. Its smallest cash-out is $1.00, sent as a gift card by email, and your first cash-out is checked by hand. Tasks done over a VPN or proxy don't count.
Which mystery shopping offers are scams?
The FTC names these in its own guidance on mystery shopping.
| Offer | What the FTC says |
|---|---|
| A fee to join, train or get certified | Always a scam |
| A paid list of shopping jobs | That list is free |
| A check to deposit and pay back out | A fake check scam |
| A promise of big or full-time pay | Only scammers promise that |
| A job notice from MSPA | MSPA doesn't hire shoppers |
In the common version, a scammer "hires" you and mails a check. You're told to deposit it, buy gift cards or wire money, and send the numbers or the money back. It can take weeks for a bank to find out the check is fake, and by then you're stuck repaying the bank, the FTC says. The BBB adds a simple test: be wary of companies that hire on the spot.
If you spot one, the FTC takes reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and it suggests telling your state attorney general too.
What does mystery shopping cost you in taxes?
As an independent contractor, you're self-employed for tax purposes. The IRS charges self-employment tax of 15.3%, 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare, on 92.35% of your net earnings. It's usually due once those earnings reach $400 in a year. You may be able to deduct business miles at the standard rate, so keep a log of your trips. Our side hustles guide works the same tax through on $1,000 of earnings.
What do other guides on this leave out?
We read eight pages that rank for mystery shopper jobs on October 23, 2026, and three more wouldn't load for us. Four are shopping companies' own pages, one is a job listing and one is a shopper app's guide. None mentions taxes or cites the BLS, and only one names the FTC. Only two warn about checks. One career site gives mystery shoppers a national average salary of $35,473 a year, though the BLS keeps no wage data on them and says most work as contractors. One listing advertises $100 to $500 a week, and adds that pay isn't guaranteed. And one result for how to become a mystery shopper was a $97 course, while the BLS says certification typically isn't needed.
Questions people ask about mystery shopper jobs
Are mystery shopper jobs real?
Yes. Retailers and restaurants hire people to try a product or service and report on it, the FTC says. But many offers are scams, and the BBB warns to be wary of any company that hires you on the spot.

No. In a 2016 profile, the BLS said the typical assignment paid $5 to $20 a trip, and some pay only covers expenses, like a refunded dinner with no wage for your time.
Can you do mystery shopping full time?
Rarely. The FTC says mystery shopping is typically part-time or occasional work that doesn't pay enough to replace a full-time job, and that only scammers say you can quit your job to do it.
Can you be a mystery shopper at 16?
It depends on the company. iShopFor Ipsos, for one, asks shoppers to be 18 or older, with a smartphone, a valid US Social Security or taxpayer number and a PayPal account.
How do mystery shoppers get paid?
Usually per assignment, after you submit your report with receipts, and often with a refund of what you bought. On iSecretShop's job board, each company sets its own payment policy: some jobs pay within days, others on a monthly schedule.
