Walking apps pay for steps in their own points, with a daily cap: WeWard up to 25 Wards a day, Sweatcoin 0.95 sweatcoins per 1,000 steps, Winwalk 1 coin per 100 steps. None states what a step is worth in dollars. We read their own pages on October 23, 2026.
We build PaysFair, an earning app that competes with the apps below, so check their numbers yourself. PaysFair is for people 16 and over.
How do apps that pay you to walk work?
Your phone counts your steps, and the app turns them into its own points when you open it. WeWard is strict about that: "You must open the app every day to validate your steps." If you don't, "they are lost and cannot be converted into Wards." The points then buy gift cards, items or, on some apps, cash.
The money comes from what the app sells around your walk. WeWard's help center says "a video ad automatically plays" for some users when they convert their steps. Sweatcoin runs offers and invites brands to feature on it. Both sell a Premium plan.
What does each app pay for your steps?
These are the rates and caps each app publishes.
| App | What steps earn | Daily cap from steps |
|---|---|---|
| WeWard | Wards | 25 Wards |
| Sweatcoin | 0.95 per 1,000 steps | 100 on Premium |
| Winwalk | 1 coin per 100 steps | 100 coins |
WeWard. "You can earn up to 25 Wards per day by converting your steps, with the possibility of increasing your daily limit." Its Premium plan, paid monthly or yearly or earned with Wards, gives "Wards x2 on your walking rewards."
Sweatcoin. "1,000 steps = 0.95 sweatcoins. We charge a small 5% commission per sweatcoin created." The Premium plan's daily limit "is 100 sweatcoins, which is equivalent to over 52,000 steps."
Winwalk. "Get 1 coin for every 100 steps you take (up to 100 coins daily)," so the cap arrives at 10,000 steps.
Can you turn the points into cash?
Only on some apps, and with conditions.
WeWard pays cash through PayPal or Venmo, plus gift cards and donations. Its terms say transfer and gift card requests "require a minimum of fourteen (14) days of activity within the Application." Its help center says a request "can take up to 15 business days," though usually 2 to 5. The Convert page "may not be immediately accessible to all users," for fraud prevention.
Sweatcoin doesn't pay cash. Its help center says "it is not possible to cashout sweatcoins via Paypal or bank transfer." The only way is "purchasing one of our PayPal or Amazon vouchers (which feature regularly in our auctions)."
Winwalk pays gift cards from stores such as Amazon and Walmart. Its App Store listing says you "Receive your gift cards immediately in the app." Our guide to free gift card apps compares what other apps pay in cards.
What is a step worth?
None of the three says. WeWard's Convert page lists "the current offers to exchange your Wards," and it says "available quantities may vary." Winwalk's site and App Store listing don't give a coin's value in dollars. Sweatcoins are an in-app currency for Sweatcoin's own marketplace.
Guides that put a price on it don't agree. For WeWard alone, the ones we read ranged from about £15 to £20 a year to "up to $1,000 a year."
What is happening to Sweat Wallet and SWEAT?
Sweat Wallet is a separate crypto app from The Sweat Foundation, a different company from Sweatcoin's Sweatco Ltd. Sweatcoin's help center says: "On 1 October 2026 The Sweat Foundation announced that Sweat Wallet and the SWEAT token, as they exist today, will end on 30 December 2026."
Until then, Sweat Wallet keeps working, and SWEAT minting for Sweatcoin users goes on. The token itself "continues to exist on the NEAR blockchain" after that date. Sweatcoin's help center says the Foundation will publish in the first week of December what happens after that. The Sweatcoin app and its sweatcoins aren't affected.
An older Sweatcoin help page, from February 2024, still points readers who want "monetary value from your steps" to Sweat Wallet.
Who can use these apps?
WeWard asks for the legal age where you live: in the European Economic Area that's 16, or 15 in France, and it refuses cash-outs to anyone under 15. Its App Store listing is rated 12+, and so is Sweatcoin's. Winwalk's listing is rated 17+.
WeWard says it's "Loved by 30 million walkers across 29 countries." Rules and rewards can differ by country, so check the app where you live.
Why we leave out apps that make you bet or buy in
Some fitness apps ask you to stake money on your own goals. The FTC settled with one of them, Pact, the company behind GymPact, in 2017. Its users "agreed to be automatically charged an amount, ranging from $5 to $50 per missed activity." The FTC alleged the company charged that penalty "even when the consumers met their goals or after they cancelled the service," and consumers got back "more than $940,000."
We also leave out walking apps that need you to buy crypto or a digital sneaker first. The FTC's rule fits both: "Never pay anyone to get paid, or to get a job. That's a sure sign of a scam."
Do apps that pay you to walk actually work?
They pay, in small amounts, for steps you'd take anyway. The caps tell you the most your steps can earn in a day, and you'll only get it if you open the app and claim them. Expect ads, offers and a Premium upsell along the way. Our guide to apps that give you money shows who pays the others, and what they want back.
PaysFair, the app we build, pays for surveys, games and campaigns. Its smallest cash-out is $1.00, sent as a gift card by email, and the first one is checked by hand.
What do other guides on this leave out?
We read five guides on apps that pay you to walk on October 23, 2026. None mentions that Sweat Wallet ends on December 30, 2026, and none gives WeWard's daily cap. Only one gives an age rule. Four list apps where you bet your own money. Two are published by companies that promote their own app, and the rest carry a referral code, affiliate links or the author's own services.
Questions people ask about apps that pay you to walk
Are apps that pay you to walk legit?

How much do walking apps pay?
None of them states what a step is worth in dollars. WeWard caps step rewards at 25 Wards a day, Winwalk at 100 coins a day, which is 10,000 steps, and Sweatcoin's Premium plan at 100 sweatcoins.
Can you cash out Sweatcoin?
Not to PayPal or a bank, its help center says. Sweatcoins buy items in its marketplace, including PayPal and Amazon vouchers that come up in its auctions.
What is happening to Sweat Wallet?

They count your steps and pay small rewards, but only for steps you claim in the app. WeWard says steps you don't validate during the day are lost and can't be converted later.
